Backpack and Gear is free to read because it is funded by affiliate commissions. This page explains exactly what that means for you.
Last updated: October 1, 2026
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
What an affiliate link is
Many of our guides link to Amazon and other retailers. If you follow one of those links and buy something, the retailer pays us a small commission. The price you pay is exactly the same as it would be had you gone to the retailer directly — the commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your pocket.
Those commissions pay for hosting, research time, and the work of keeping a large library of guides current.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean brands pay us for coverage. They do not, and we do not accept sponsored reviews or paid placements.
- It does not mean the highest-commission product wins. Commission rates play no part in how we rank or recommend.
- It does not mean we only link to products that pay. Where the right answer earns us nothing, we still say it.
Our full standards, including how we handle corrections, are on the Editorial Policy page, and our research method is set out under How We Research & Review.
Programs we take part in
We participate in the Amazon Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. We may also take part in other retailer and network affiliate programs on the same terms described above.
Your part in it
Always check the product page before you buy. Specifications, variants, and availability change, and the retailer’s listing is the authority on what you are actually ordering.
