Backpack and Gear is an independent product-guide site. We publish buying guides, head-to-head comparisons, and roundups across outdoor, travel, tools, auto, and home gear — written so you can decide what to buy without reading a brochure.
We are a small editorial team, not a storefront. We do not sell anything, we do not take payment for placement, and we do not publish sponsored reviews.
What we publish
- Buying guides — what actually separates one product from another in a category, and which buyer each option suits.
- Roundups — a shortlist of options compared on the same criteria, so the trade-offs are visible side by side.
- Explainers — the background you need before shopping: sizing, standards, specs, and the jargon manufacturers use.
Meet our team
Every article on this site carries a byline. Here is who writes them.
Founder & Editor
Brian started Backpack and Gear to make gear shopping less of a guessing game. He sets our editorial standards, decides which categories we cover, and edits guides before they publish.
Senior Editor
Travis plans and edits our comparison roundups, checks spec tables against what manufacturers actually publish, and keeps older guides current as models are replaced.
Staff Writer — Tools & Workshop
Marcus covers tools, workshop equipment, and gear that gets used hard. His guides say plainly who a product suits and who should skip it.
Staff Writer — Bags & Travel
Nathan writes about everyday carry, bags, and travel accessories — short on marketing language, clear about what you give up at each price point.
Staff Writer — Home, Garage & Auto
Shane works out which specifications actually matter to a buyer and which are just numbers on a spec sheet, across home, garage, and auto categories.
Contributing Writer — Outdoor & Camping
Cory focuses on how outdoor and camping gear differs in real use — fit, durability, and whether the next tier up is worth the extra spend.
How we work
Our guides are built from manufacturer specifications, published standards, retailer listings, and owner feedback at volume — then edited for whether a reader can act on them. We revisit guides when models are discontinued, replaced, or meaningfully changed.
We write about what we can verify. Where we have not handled a product ourselves, we say so rather than implying hands-on testing we did not do.
The full detail is in two places:
Editorial Policy — standards, corrections, and independence.
How We Research & Review — the method behind every guide.
How we are funded
Backpack and Gear is reader-funded through affiliate links. When you buy through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Commissions never decide what we recommend or how a product ranks. Full terms are on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
