Cortina
In the southern Alps, Cortina Italy is a commune and town. Located at an altitude of 1,224m is the city center. Encircled nearly completely on four sides by the high Dolomites, Cortina is situated more or less to the center of the Valle d'Ampezzo. In 2008, population was 6,150. From Bocca di Brenta to Molvena is a great hike!

Dolomites
Located in north eastern Italy, the Dolomites are a mountain range. It extends from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley in the east and is a part of Southern Limestone Alps. The southern and northern borders are defined by the Sugana Valley and the Puster Valley. Between the provinces of Trentino, South Tyrol and Belluno, the Dolomites are nearly equally shared.
There are also mountain groups of similar geological structure that spread far away over the Adige River to the west - Western Dolomites (Dolomiti di Brenta); and over the River Piave to the east - Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave. Located between the provinces of Vicenza, Verona and Trentino, there is also another smaller group called Little Dolomites (Piccole Dolomiti).
Dolomiti di Brenta
Located in the Dolomites are many other regional parks and one national park. The Dolomites were declared a natural heritage site by UNESCO, in August 2009.
The Dolomites, a tourist mecca, are famous for Base Jumping, hiking, and mountain climbing, as well as hang gliding and paragliding in summer and late spring/early autumn and skiing in the winter months. Since 1887, when seventeen year old George Winkler soloed the first ascent of the pinnacle Die Vajoletturme, free climbing has been a tradition in the Dolomites.
The main centers include: San Martino di Castrozza, as well as the whole of the Badia, Gardena and Fassa valleys, the small towns of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Auronzo, Falcade, Alleghe and the villages of Rocca Pietore, Urtijei and Arabba alongside the Marmolada Glacier, which lies on the border of Veneto and Trentino.

Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park
In order to protect a territory of naturalistic value and extraordinary landscape, Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park was created. In the 18th century, Mount Serva and the Vette di Feltre were already famous for their flora. Mainly due to the geographical position of the territory is a great variety of natural environments and the presence of rare species.
Situated on the edge of the South eastern Alps, the Park is in impracticable areas which, in part, were not covered by the glaciers forming during the glacial periods of the Quaternary, the last of which disappeared about ten to twelve thousand years ago.
Take the road following uphill a stream with high solid flow, from Forno di Zoldo. Even if they are still outside the Park area, some wet biotopes are very interesting. You reach loc. Acqua de la Madonna, Pian dei Plaui, and Malga Pramper, after crossing beech and spruce fir woods.
Forno di Zoldo
The itinerary features spectacular views over Spiz di Mezzodi; you can walk further up and reach Sommariva at Pramperet Mountain Hut at 1,850m, with important sites at Pra della Vedova and spectacular marshy flowers in bloom.
From here you can reach a place where the karst and glacial formations have curious shapes, Van de Zita and Pian de Fontana along a well marked and charming trail crossing Piazedai. For their rare floral species, the northern slopes of Talvena are very interesting. You can deepen your knowledge by reading the hiking literature, but these itineraries require caution and experience.
Pian de Fontana
Declared strict nature reserve, the Park Plan aims at safeguarding the area with the highest peaks. Featuring interesting environmental features, therefore, it is recommended to follow the easily accessible and marked itineraries developing in the valley bottoms. If you are a hiker, then you will love backpacking around Cortina Italy!
